The often overlooked side of a cancer diagnosis

A cancer diagnosis often sets in motion a series of steps that involves a treatment plan. It is often a blinkered view focusing on prognosis and outcomes and leaves companions or family members as onlookers to a process that is frequently frightening and anxiety-laden. Unfortunately, this puts the cancer at the very center of attention instead of the person. Many integrative doctors are realizing the importance of keeping patients well instead of just alive. Medicine alone is not enough; cancer is not just a physical condition but one that has implications for mental health and social-emotional well-being. During my studies with Memorial Sloan Kettering, it was heartening to see them employ a more integrated approach to cancer care which includes acupuncture. Many of the treatments for cancer such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy carry unpleasant side-effects which can be ameliorated with acupuncture. Patients are offered social support with counselling services or mindfulness training with meditation. There is mounting research which suggests that taking an integrative approach improves the chances of patients completing a treatment plan, which in turn improves outcomes. It can reduce depression and anxiety and help with body image issues which is often a source of distress for many patients.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whilst this time can be a source of great strength and solidarity it can equally be a distressing reminder of a personal struggle or loved one who succumbed to the disease. I would like to encourage anyone to reach out for help at any time of the year. Furthermore, I would encourage you to take charge of the things that bring tremendous health benefits; quit smoking, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, limit red meat and alcohol intake, make sure you are getting adequate sleep and exercise and find a way to manage stress with some kind of mind-body technique such as meditation, deep breathing or yoga. Keep well and healthy xx
