Smoking is a habit that has complex physical, psychological and social factors. Nicotine is highly addictive and and is equivalent to other drugs such as cocaine and heroine.

There are several options that you can make if you want to quit smoking; going cold turkey, nicotine patches/spray/gum, prescription drugs like Chantix which control withdrawal symptoms and behavioral therapy.

Acupuncture alongside counselling, education and patches etc, is more effective than any one of those methods on its own.

Things that can help you along your new path to clear and healthy breathing are to know your triggers and avoid them early on. If you smoke only when you're having a drink, then avoiding alcohol may may quitting easier. The first few days are tough- your body is craving nicotine and the withdrawal symptoms such as cold sweats, shaking and restlessness are the body's way of resetting and detoxing. Support is vital either from a non-smoking partner or counsellor, FB group etc. A new hobby with non-smoking friends may be a good distraction. Take pleasure in your renewed sense of smell and taste.

After just two weeks being cigarette-free, circulation and lung function improve and after one year the risk of heart disease is reduced to 50%.
