What is Electro-Acupuncture and how can it help me?

Our nervous system sends tiny electrical impulses throughout our bodies to regulate its function and respond to external and internal stimuli. If we step on a something sharp, our lightening quick reaction is to pull up our foot in pain and look to see what's caused the pain and if we need to look after that injury. If we are dehydrated, our blood vessels contract in our brain and we get a headache. Without electricity, our bodies would be unable to function since muscles and organs need those signals to respond accordingly.

With electro-acupuncture, we are able to send tiny electrical impulses via the needles to help condition muscles after an injury and improve their function. We can also stimulate the production of your body's own pain killers (beta-endorphins) to help manage pain. We are able to regulate the nervous system using different frequencies that stimulate the release of different neuro-transmitters specific for certain functions for example, ACTH for an anti-inflammatory effect.

The most exciting thing though is that the benefit of electro-acupuncture can be longer-lasting than traditional acupuncture and we can target specific areas from the spine to affect areas of the body the needles cannot go e.g. internal organs. So, if you have a digestive problem, electro-acupuncture could probably help relieve the discomfort and regulate your digestion.

Over the last few years I've attended and been certified in this new and exciting field of electro-acupuncture medicine. Some of you have already benefitted from these treatments in the office! Science and acupuncture continue to grow and as we learn more, we can see how acupuncture 'fits' into the Western definitions of medicine and science and that the future of medicine lies in how we can get our body, mind and spirit to function optimally without the excessive use of drugs or medications.
